Industrial STP Design Guide

By BIOPOWER (BPG Renewables Pvt Ltd) · Updated June 2026 · STP · Industrial Design

Industrial STP design starts with effluent characterisation — COD, BOD, TSS, oils, and metals dictate pre-treatment, biology selection, and discharge standards. A phased DPR prevents over-engineering and KSPCB rejection.

Design philosophy

Unlike municipal STPs, industrial systems face shock loads, cleaning chemicals, and seasonal production cycles. BIOPOWER follows: characterise → segregate → pre-treat → biological treat → tertiary polish → reuse/discharge.

Process train components

Pre-treatment

Screening, oil traps, DAF for suspended fats, and equalisation tanks dampen flow variation — critical for biological stability.

Biological treatment

MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) uses plastic carriers for biomass — compact, robust. SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) cycles fill-react-settle-decant — excellent for batch industries.

Tertiary & reuse

Sand filters, activated carbon, UF/RO for reuse. ZLD (zero liquid discharge) adds evaporation — viable where groundwater extraction is restricted.

KSPCB and CPCB compliance

Design to notified inlet/outlet standards for your sector. Consent to Establish (CTE) and Consent to Operate (CTO) require hydraulic and load calculations, lab pilot data where effluent is non-standard, and O&M manuals.

CAPEX vs OPEX trade-offs

Over-automation raises capex; under-designed biology raises chemical and sludge costs. BIOPOWER models 10-year lifecycle cost — not just lowest bid capex. Typical industrial STP capex ranges ₹8–40 lakh per 100 KLD depending on reuse level.

Modular vs civil STP

Packaged ISO-container plants deploy in 4–8 weeks — ideal for expansions. Civil MBBR suits permanent high-capacity sites. Hybrid approaches use packaged pre-treatment with civil biology.

Monitoring and digital O&M

Online COD, pH, and flow meters with SCADA reduce compliance risk. BIOPOWER AMC includes quarterly lab tests and sludge management coordination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between STP and ETP?

STP treats sewage (human wastewater); ETP treats industrial process effluent. Many plants combine both with segregated streams and different pre-treatment trains.

MBBR or SBR for food industry?

MBBR handles variable organic loads with smaller footprint; SBR suits batch discharge patterns. BIOPOWER models both before selection.

Can treated water be reused?

Yes — after tertiary filtration and disinfection, reuse for cooling towers, gardening, and flushing is common and reduces freshwater intake.
